Kholanjan (also spelled Khulanjan or Kulanjan) refers to Galangal root, a member of the rhizome family closely related to ginger and turmeric. It is widely used in Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern cuisines, as well as in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine.

Varieties and Scientific Names
The term "Kholanjan" can refer to two main species:
  • Greater Galangal (Alpinia galanga): A larger, milder rhizome common in Thai and Indonesian cooking.
  • Lesser Galangal (Alpinia officinarum): A smaller, more pungent root with a darker reddish-brown exterior, often specifically referred to as Kholanjan or Khoudanjale in Arabic and Persian traditions.

Key Uses and Benefits
  • Culinary: It provides a sharp, spicy, and citrusy flavor to dishes like Bukhari rice, curries, and soups.
  • Digestive Health: Traditionally used to treat indigestion, bloating, flatulence, and colic cramps.
  • Respiratory Support: It acts as an expectorant, helping to relieve coughs, chest congestion, and asthma.
  • Anti-inflammatory & Antioxidant: Rich in antioxidants like galangin, it is used to reduce inflammation and may help in preventing certain types of cellular damage.
  • Hair and Skin Care: Applied topically in oil or powder form, it is used to treat dandruff and promote scalp health due to its antiseptic properties.

Usage Tips
  • Powdered Form: Commonly found as "Kulanjan Powder," it is used in traditional remedies by mixing with honey or milk.
  • Tea/Infusion: For digestive issues, an infusion of 2–4 grams is often recommended before meals.
  • Precautions: While generally safe, excessive consumption may lead to side effects like diarrhea or reduced appetite. It is typically advised to avoid during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless under medical supervision.
