Styrofoam plates, technically made of expanded polystyrene foam (EPS), are a common type of lightweight, disposable food service ware. They are widely used for picnics, parties, and takeout due to their low cost and insulating properties.

- Material: They are made from polystyrene plastic, a synthetic resin derived from petrochemicals, expanded into a foam structure that is 98% air.
- Identification: Products made from this material usually carry the Resin Identification Code 6.
- Properties: Polystyrene foam is lightweight, provides insulation to keep food at temperature, and is resistant to moisture.
Environmental and Recycling Information
Styrofoam plates have a significant environmental impact due to several factors:
- Non-Biodegradable: They are not biodegradable and can persist in the environment for over 500 years, making them a major source of litter and pollution.
- Recycling Challenges: While technically 100% recyclable, many curbside recycling programs do not accept them. This is because the material is bulky (inefficient for transport) and easily contaminated by food residue. Specialized drop-off locations or facilities may accept clean foam products for processing into recycled polystyrene pellets.
- Bans: Due to environmental concerns, many cities and states have implemented bans on single-use polystyrene foam food containers and plates.
